Do you need Rental Car Insurance?

19geh6n9esxisjpgAre you looking forward to a summer getaway? Will you be renting a car? If so, you should research Rental Car Insurance Coverage. When renting a vehicle you will be offered the option to purchase different levels of protection, like Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) Many drivers are confused and often don’t know if they need these additional policies.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is optional and covers the rental vehicle in the event of an accident, damage or theft. Car rental companies use a LDW or CDW as a waiver of their right to make the car renter pay for the damages caused by the driver of the rental car.

Before renting a car, McLean Insurance recommends you call your agent to ask what type of coverage for rental cars is included in your current car insurance. Many policies cover rentals with the same type and amount of coverage as your personal vehicle. However, if your current policy does not cover car rentals, has a high deductible, does not include collision coverage or enough comprehensive coverage, you may want to consider LDW or CDW coverage offered by the rental company.

Another option is to call the credit card company you will be using to pay for the car rental. Many credit card companies provide additional coverage, but be sure to know the limits, types of coverage and the amount it covers.

An Umbrella Policy is another type of coverage that helps limit liability among a variety of situations, including renting a car.

If you’re going to be traveling outside the United States with a rental car, be aware your auto policy only covers you in the USA, Canada and U.S territories like Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

When traveling abroad, you may be required to have an International Driving Permit. An International drivers permit, or IDP features a picture of you and translates your name and relevant information in 10 different languages. You must carry your IDP and actual license when driving abroad. You can only apply for an IDP through the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the National Automobile Club (NAC).

Refer to the table below to learn the minimum and possible maximum age requirements to rent a car abroad, if an IDP (International Driving Permit) is required or optional, if CDW is optional or required and other possible restrictions:
